NYPD workers disciplined for racist Facebook posts

The NYPD has disciplined 17 cops for posting offensive comments about the West Indian Day Parade on Facebook, spokesman Paul Browne said today.

The department identified cops who posted derogatory or inflammatory statements on a page discussing the event last year and took action against every NYPD employee identified, Browne added.

The discussion contained about 150 remarks criticizing the parade when top brass discovered that close to two dozen were cops who posted complaints about the gun violence at the event and insults toward attendees.

?We identified 17 who made the offensive comments,? Brown explained.

Of those, four cops received specifications and charges, which could lead to sanctions including job loss if they lose at departmental trials. Six received command disciplines, which can range from warnings to loss of up to 10 paid vacation days.

?A third group received letters instructing them not to behave in a way that puts the department in a bad light,? Browne said.

Several of the complaints had to do with gun violence, which was so bad last year it made media headlines.

Despite the controversy last year, Browne said no memos, reminders or policy changes are expected as this year?s West Indian Day Parade approaches.

?We have, in the police academy, training on issues of conduct unbecoming a police officer and you?re expected to act appropriately on- and off-duty,? Browne added. ?We have instruction along those lines but nothing specific to the parade.?

The department has not publicly identified the alleged offenders but Browne said the NYPD believes it netted all cops who violated policy or made the department look bad.

After the controversy surfaced, several NYPD cops complained that court rulings and departmental policy stifle their free speech rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. Courts have found those rights don?t extend to comments reflecting on cops? jobs, union sources said.
