How do I start investing in Gold? | Gold Investment Trading Report

Q: How do I start investing in Gold?

Hello I live in U.S.A Georgia, and I would like to start investing in Gold? Is there a way I can?

Goldsenze Answer:

You can buy gold bars and have them stored for you or shipped to you. But this is costly and you should research it carefully.

A better bet is gold ETFs. They are efficient, easy to buy and easy to sell. There are some that buy gold mining stocks while others by gold. bullion.

iShares COMEX Gold Trust (IAU) and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) are the two ETFs that have been around for the longest and are probably you best bet.

However, I would not recommend gold at all. If you do buy any gold, it should be only about 5% of your portfolio as a diversifier. In the long run gold is expected to keep pace with inflation, but with substantial volatility.

Gold has boomed in recent years, however, the late comers to any boom get killed. Gold is up to about $ 1,100 from a low around $ 270 in 2001. You already missed the opportunity in Gold. Tech investors made the same mistake in 1999 ? jumping on the band wagon only to get killed in 2000 ? 2002. Real estate investors made the same mistake investing in the mid 2000?s, only to get crushed in 2007 ? 2008.

If you want to make money, you do not buy the last craze, you buy the next craze. And therein lies the problem. What is the next craze?

Mark my words, this will not go well for you. Over time gold should keep pace with inflation. If you inflate the price from the 1930?s gold should be trading around $ 250 per ounce. If you inflate the price from the mid 1970?s, gold should be trading around $ 650 per ounce. If you inflate the price from around 2000, gold should be trading around $ 350 per ounce.

The only way you can justify today?s price is to inflate the gold bubble from the early 80?s. If you inflate the peak price of over $ 800 from 1980, you get a price for gold above $ 2,000 an ounce. However from that point gold lost more than 60% of its value over the next 20 years.

You might get lucky and ride the gold bubble to over $ 2,000 per ounce, but even if that happens, you probably will not have the sense to sell. You will get caught up in the euphoria of the gold bubble, just like people do in every bubble.

Don?t do it!

Reachable Creates Customized Database for Your Small Business ...

Small businesses today need to keep track of customers and colleagues. But for many smal businesses, contact lists can be spread over several electronic devices, not to mention old-fashioned paper address books and Post-It notes. Further complicating matters, small businesses also subscribe to online databases like Data.com to find new contacts.

Rather than searching an existing database for people you already know, wouldn?t it be nice to be able to import your existing contacts from various social media sites into a comprehensive database of new contacts? Reachable, from the founder of Jaspersoft, pulls your contacts from Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as your e-mail address books, into its database of more than 65 million professionals, putting everything in one place.

?Our mission is to help professionals leverage all their contacts, both online and offline, to extend their professional networks so they can reach more people, build stronger relationships, and conduct business faster and more efficiently,? Reachable CEO Al Campa states.

Reachable isn?t only for those in the sales field, but works great for recruiters, business owners, marketing execs, and anyone else who hopes to grow their network of contacts. By incorporating existing colleagues alongside more than 65 million new contacts, Reachable positions small businesses to grow, encouraging networking beyond the business owner?s current range of friends and associates.

But Reachable doesn?t stop at combining your contacts with its database. The service uses the information you provide to create a database that can best help your small business grow. Reachable?s goal is to distill the path between you and the network you need. If you need to make a connection, Reachable can help you find the quickest way to an introduction, based on your existing contacts.

For those who use Salesforce.com, Reachable?s integration with Salesforce is good news. In fact, Reachable?s VP of sales, Greg Fiorindo, spent the past decade in sales with Salesforce, giving him an in-depth understanding of the needs of today?s sales professional. Along with the rest of the executive team at Reachable, Fiorindo is excited about the changes Cloud-based CRM software is bringing to the corporate environment.

Reachable has also announced integration with Oracle CRM On Demand, an online version of Oracle available through a monthly subscription (also known as SaaS). Small businesses who use Oracle CRM to keep up with customers and other contacts will have the convenience of combining the power of Reachable?s millions of contacts with the easy-to-use interface of Oracle CRM On Demand. Your database will be organized in order of the closeness of a contact?s relationship to you, as defined by the strength of your connection in Reachable?s searches.

Your information will be securely stored within the Reachable system, with any data removed if you ever choose to end your agreement with the service. If you aren?t sure whether Reachable is for your small business, the company is offering a free trial of both its online and CRM versions. Visit Reachable.com for more information.

HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One

If you need an inexpensive personal printer in any size office, make sure the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One ($99.99 direct) is somewhere on your must see list. One of the few $100 printers that leans more towards office needs than home printing needs, with features like faxing and an automatic document feeder (ADF), it offers all the key features you need for light duty office use at a surprisingly low price.

The 4620's price and office-centric design put it in head-to-head competition with the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars). Each printer offers some advantages over the other?the MFC-J430w delivers faster print speed, for example, while only the 4260 can print through the cloud. But either one can serve nicely as a personal printer in any size office or in the dual role of home and home office printer.

Like the MFC-J430w, the 4620 can print from, scan to, and fax from a PC as well as work as a standalone copier and fax machine. Its ADF offers a slightly higher capacity, at 35-sheets, and?as with the Brother printer's ADF? it complements the letter-size flatbed, to let you scan multipage documents and legal size paper. Neither printer offers memory card slots, support for PictBridge cameras, or other photocentric features.

Another similarity is that the 4620 doesn't offer wired network support, but offers WiFi, so you can share it in a micro office or at home in the dual role of home and home office printer. However, the limited paper handling?with an 80 sheet tray, no duplexing, and no upgrade options?makes it a poor choice for sharing in an office.

The Wi-Fi also opens the door to the features HP implies by calling the printer an e-All-in-One, including HP ePrint (for printing through the cloud), Apple AirPrint (for printing from iOS devices), and the HP ePrint Home & Biz print app (for printing from both Android and iOS devices). However, none of features will work unless the printer itself is connected to a network by Wi-Fi. If you plan to connect by USB to a computer that's on a network, you can't use them whether you have Wi-Fi on your network or not.

Setup, Speed and Quality
Setting up the 4620 is standard fare. For my tests, I installed it on a Windows Vista system using a USB connection. On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), it scored reasonably well for speed, at an effective 3.4 pages per minute (ppm). That makes the 4620 significantly slower than the MFC-J430w at 4.3 ppm, but keep in mind that the Brother printer's fast speed is one of the reasons it's an Editors' Choice.

HP OfficeJet 4620

As another point of reference, the 4620 is notably faster than the somewhat more expensive Dell V525w All-in-One Wireless Inkjet Printer ($129.99 direct, 3 stars), with its more typical speed for this price range, at 2.9 ppm. Note too that much like the 4620's speed for business applications, its photo speed was also reasonably fast, but short of impressive, averaging 1 minute 3 seconds for a 4 by 6.

The printer's output quality is generally par for an inkjet. Text quality is arguably a touch below par, but best described as being at the bottom of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjet printers fall. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you should find it suitable for most business needs. Graphics output quality is dead on par, which makes it easily good enough for business needs.

Photos were also par overall, but the rating breaks down as better than par for color and a little worse than par for black and white. More precisely, black and white photos in my tests showed a slight tint and a lack of deep dark blacks. Color photos, however, were at least as good as the high end of the range I would expect from drug store prints. If color is all you print, the issues for black and white are irrelevant.

If you're looking for an inexpensive, office-centric personal printer, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One will certainly do the job. I'd like it better if it also had an Ethernet connector, so you wouldn't be forced to have Wi-Fi on your network to use the features that make it an e-All-in-One. But if you already have a Wi-Fi network or don't mind setting one up, that's not an issue. If you don't need those features, you should also consider the Brother MFC-J430w with its faster speed. But whether you want those features or not, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One is a capable choice and well worth considering.

How to fund your foreign nonprofit with US donations

The US is fairly easy place to do traditional business. We have far fewer restrictions on who may operate or own a business than other countries, and while there?s still progress to be made in streamlining regulatory compliance at multiple levels of government, it?s not always arcane.

?

But nonprofits are a little more trouble when the money and operations start to cross our borders. The IRS?s concern is that it?s easy to use insufficiently supervised overseas entities or operations to shelter income ? by making tax -deductible donations from US income that, instead of being dedicated to a public and charitable purpose, find their way back into private pockets.

?

?

As with a for-profit company, one way to avoid some of the restrictions can be to establish the business in a new jurisdiction. Someone operating a foreign charity asked for some advice about incorporating a foreign nonprofit in the US.?

?

First off, a few critical questions:?

  1. Is there a foreign charity already in existence? Does it meet US rules about no private benefits?
  2. Is the goal of this exercise merely to solicit US donations that will be ax-deductible to donors?
  3. If the goal is indeed to form a new US charity, is that entity going to operate in the US or in the foreign country, or will it merely channel funds to the foreign organization?

?

Why do these questions matter??Donations to non-US charities are deductible only under specified circumstances. Grants by US charities are scrutinized under similar rules; foreign ?operations? by US charities are more flexible because the charity is subject to the same rules that govern its use of funds domestically.

?

A second way to approach the issue is to just solve the donation deductibility problem for the particular organization and operations (both must be compliant).?I recently answered a question about how to make?US-source donations?to an international nonprofit.?

?

In terms of straight funneling of money, Paypal is probably the easiest way, with a strong global web presence. If the question, however, is how to preserve the deductible nature of the donation for US taxpayers, then it?s a bit more complicated.

?

Certain foreign nonprofits are okay by US standards, and they can be found in?Pub. 78. There are also special rules for certain Canadian and Mexican charities. Many US nonprofits operate programs in other countries either on their own or through properly supervised/reviewed programs. If one of those channels is available, it?s preferable (at least in terms of being easier) from a fundraising perspective.

?

Finally, a US organization can go through the process of qualifying a foreign organization based on rules and procedures set out by the IRS. It?s complicated under the best scenarios and complicated because the legal status of organizations is sometimes very different in other countries.

?

This qualification is not a mere paperwork drill; you should expect to conduct actual investigation and inquiries covering what actually happens in the foreign operations.

Powerful "Flame" cyber weapon found in Iran

BOSTON (Reuters) - Security experts said on Monday a highly sophisticated computer virus is infecting computers in Iran and other Middle East countries and may have been deployed at least five years ago to engage in state-sponsored cyber espionage.

Evidence suggest that the virus, dubbed Flame, may have been built on behalf of the same nation or nations that commissioned the Stuxnet worm that attacked Iran's nuclear program in 2010, according to Kaspersky Lab, the Russian cyber security software maker that took credit for discovering the infections.

Kaspersky researchers said they have yet to determine whether Flame had a specific mission like Stuxnet, and declined to say who they think built it.

Iran has accused the United States and Israel of deploying Stuxnet.

Cyber security experts said the discovery publicly demonstrates what experts privy to classified information have long known: that nations have been using pieces of malicious computer code as weapons to promote their security interests for several years.

"This is one of many, many campaigns that happen all the time and never make it into the public domain," said Alexander Klimburg, a cyber security expert at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs.

A cyber security agency in Iran said on its English website that Flame bore a "close relation" to Stuxnet, the notorious computer worm that attacked that country's nuclear program in 2010 and is the first publicly known example of a cyber weapon.

Iran's National Computer Emergency Response Team also said Flame might be linked to recent cyber attacks that officials in Tehran have said were responsible for massive data losses on some Iranian computer systems.

Kaspersky Lab said it discovered Flame after a U.N. telecommunications agency asked it to analyze data on malicious software across the Middle East in search of the data-wiping virus reported by Iran.

STUXNET CONNECTION

Experts at Kaspersky Lab and Hungary's Laboratory of Cryptography and System Security who have spent weeks studying Flame said they have yet to find any evidence that it can attack infrastructure, delete data or inflict other physical damage.

Yet they said they are in the early stages of their investigations and that they may discover other purposes beyond data theft. It took researchers months to determine the key mysteries behind Stuxnet, including the purpose of modules used to attack a uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, Iran.

If Kaspersky's findings are validated, Flame could go down in history as the third major cyber weapon uncovered after Stuxnet and its data-stealing cousin Duqu, named after the Star Wars villain.

The Moscow-based company is controlled by Russian malware researcher Eugene Kaspersky. It gained notoriety after solving several mysteries surrounding Stuxnet and Duqu.

Officials with Symantec Corp and Intel Corp McAfee security division, the top 2 makers of anti-virus software, said they were studying Flame.

"It seems to be more complex than Duqu but it's too early to tell its place in history," said Dave Marcus, director of advanced research and threat intelligence with McAfee.

Symantec Security Response manager Vikram Thakur said that his company's experts believed there was a "high" probability that Flame was among the most complex pieces of malicious software ever discovered.

At least one rival of Kaspersky expressed skepticism.

Privately held Webroot said its automatic virus-scanning engines detected Flame in December 2007, but that it did not pay much attention because the code was not particularly menacing.

That is partly because it was easy to discover and remove, said Webroot Vice President Joe Jaroch. "There are many more dangerous threats out there today," he said.

MAPPING IT OUT

Kaspersky's research shows the largest number of infected machines are in Iran, followed by Israel and the Palestinian territories, then Sudan and Syria.

The virus contains about 20 times as much code as Stuxnet, which caused centrifuges to fail at the Iranian enrichment facility it attacked. It has about 100 times as much code as a typical virus designed to steal financial information, said Kaspersky Lab senior researcher Roel Schouwenberg.

Flame can gather data files, remotely change settings on computers, turn on PC microphones to record conversations, take screen shots and log instant messaging chats.

Kaspersky Lab said Flame and Stuxnet appear to infect machines by exploiting the same flaw in the Windows operating system and that both viruses employ a similar way of spreading.

That means the teams that built Stuxnet and Duqu might have had access to the same technology as the team that built Flame, Schouwenberg said.

He said that a nation state would have the capability to build such a sophisticated tool, but declined to comment on which countries might do so.

The question of who built flame is sure to become a hot topic in the security community as well as the diplomatic world.

There is some controversy over who was behind Stuxnet and Duqu. Some experts suspect the United States and Israel, a view that was laid out in a January 2011 New York Times report that said it came from a joint program begun around 2004 to undermine what they say are Iran's efforts to build a bomb.

The U.S. Defense Department, CIA, State Department, National Security Agency, and U.S. Cyber Command declined to comment.

Hungarian researcher Boldizsar Bencsath, whose Laboratory of Cryptography and Systems Security first discovered Duqu, said his analysis shows that Flame may have been active for at least five years and perhaps eight years or more.

That implies it was active long before Stuxnet.

"It's huge and overly complex, which makes me think it's a first-generation data gathering tool," said Neil Fisher, vice president for global security solutions at Unisys Corp. "We are going to find more of these things over time."

Others said cyber weapons technology has inevitably advanced since Flame was built.

"The scary thing for me is: if this is what they were capable of five years ago, I can only think what they are developing now," Mohan Koo, managing director of British-based Dtex Systems cyber security company.

Some experts speculated that the discovery of the virus may have dealt a psychological blow to its victims, on top of whatever damage Flame may have already inflicted to their computers.

"If a government initiated the attack it might not care that the attack was discovered," said Klimburg of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs. "The psychological effect of the penetration could be nearly as profitable as the intelligence gathered."

Female Concussions on the Rise in Soccer. ? Tutor System ...

?

Lynn Taylor of the Rapid City Journal staff?in?Rapid City, South Dakota on May 26, 2012 comments?about?an astounding 173,285 brain injuries that are reported annually in the U.S. related to sports or recreation in children from birth to 19 years of age according to?the CDC.

Agencies like the Rapid City Concussion Project are helping by publishing information about the signs of concussions such as:

? appearing dazed or stunned

? confused about assignment or position

? forgetting an instruction

? unsure of game, score, or opponent

? moving clumsily

? answering questions slowly

? losing consciousness (even for a few minutes)

? showing mood, behavior, or personality changes

? inability to recall events prior to or after the?injury

Although most people think of boys or men when sports injuries occur ?new research shows that female soccer players are the second most injury prone group ?to football players in the number of concussions suffered. The research also shows that female athletes suffer greater side effects than males and that they last longer than in males.

?

These new research results indicate that people should think differently now and not consider the injury irrelevant according to Dr. Christopher Dietrich of the Rehab Doctors in Rapid City.

A greater emphasis ?now prevails on education to prevent brain concussions. There are new projects for parents and coaches with information about the injury and computerized concussion assessment measurements. Comparisons can be made before and after concussions. These tests ?help players and coaches decide how safe it is for the athlete to play and/or to return to the game after an injury. An?American Journal of Sports Medicine study recently published showed that younger and female athletes take longer to recover and have longer term side effects (headaches, sensitivity to light, depression) than males.

?

Dr.Dietrich ?believes that younger athletes ?face greater risks because their brains are still in the developing stage. In females estrogen levels and a greater blood flow to the brain than males may be the cause of this phenomenon.

The neck muscles of girls are not as strong as those of males so when ?the ball is ?hit with the head in the game of soccer this may also be a ? cause of concussions. However most concussions occur from body to body contact. The size of the player and the intensity with which the game is played also have to be considered.

When brain concussions, unfortunately, lead to immobility of a limb one of the best physical therapy solutions is through the use of the TUTOR system. The HANDTUTOR is a comfortable ergonomic glove that connects to a computerized ?set of challenging games which provide intensive exercises when there is a disability in the hand, arm or elbow. The ARMTUTOR is a brace that can help achieve success in limb rehabilitation in upper limb injuries. The LEGTUTOR ?likewise supports injury therapy for ankles, feet and other ?lower limbs. The 3DTUTOR is a wireless motion feedback device that can be positioned on discrete joints of the head, trunk or upper and lower extremities. This allows for the evaluation and treatment of choice. The 3DTUTOR is used alone or in conjunction with the other TUTORs to exercise additional interjoint coordination movements.

Currently in use in leading U.S. and European hospitals, clinics and rehabilitation centers the TUTOR system is available for children as young as 4 or 5 as well as for adults. The TUTORs can also be used through telerehabiliation when the patient is discharged from the hospital or lives too far from a physical therapy facility. The TUTORs are fully certified by the FDA and CE. See WWW.MEDITOUCH.CO.IL for more information.

Stand Back When Snapping Turtles Crop Up In The Garden

The best thing to do when this gal shows up in your garden is to let her be

T. Susan Chang

The best thing to do when this gal shows up in your garden is to let her be

Late spring in a New England vegetable garden is usually a time for the last asparagus, the crisp lettuce and arugula, the first pea shoots, and the first sprouting of warm-weather crops like peppers and zucchini. What you don't expect to see planted in your beds are snapping turtles. But that's just what turned up in mine twice this week.

I was talking in my garden with a friend when I noticed what looked like a large leather satchel tossed in the strawberry bed. On closer inspection, it turned out to be a 30-pound snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) ? no doubt on leave from our nearby town pond ? and capable of snapping off a finger with a beak curved as close and tight as my heavy-duty pruners. Over the next couple of days, reports of turtle sightings from friends and neighbors seemed to come in every few hours.

Apparently, the appearance of these uninvited garden guests was no fluke. It's been happening a lot lately as their natural habitats shrink.

?

It's nesting season, says Alexxia Bell of the Turtle Rescue League. Female snapping turtles leave their watery habitats behind once a year to lay eggs. "Basically, they like top loam, where a little sun will hit it. They'll dig on a bit of a hill, not a valley," she tells The Salt. In other words, from a turtle's point of view, a recently cultivated raised garden bed looks like a pretty ideal spot.

You can eat the eggs, or call a wildlife rescue team to incubate them properly

T. Susan Chang

You can eat the eggs, or call a wildlife rescue team to incubate them properly

After finding a promising site, female snapping turtles scuffle the dirt with their hind legs and lay a clutch of 15 to 50 eggs. It's best, Bell says, to "let the turtle just do her thing. After a couple of hours she'll leave, and she won't come back till next year." Between laying the eggs and returning to the site for the next clutch, "she'll have nothing to do with her young."

In fact, the Turtle Rescue League encourages residents to create "turtle gardens" ? what look like ordinary raised beds for flowers or vegetables, left unplanted for turtles to discover and use as nests.

Although it's best to leave the snapping turtle alone, if you must move it, first make sure no small children or pets are close by, as sudden and unpredictable movement can rile it, Bell says. They do have a mean bite.

Approach quickly but calmly from behind, and place one hand palm up under the turtle's belly ? as in this video. Lift the tail near the base of the shell with the other hand, and don't go within two feet of the beak, she says. Snapping turtles have long and flexible necks, and can stretch their heads backward over their shells and sideways all the way to their back legs to get at you when they feel threatened.

Don't lift the turtle off the ground by the tail, as this can dislodge the turtle's vertebrae and sharply reduce its chance of survival in the wild, Bell says.

When I returned to the garden a couple of days after my turtle encounter to transplant some zucchini, I found a bonus under the dirt ? eggs that looked like 30 or so miniature pingpong balls. I spooned them into my transplant pots and brought them inside.

I consulted with friends online, who were equally divided over whether the eggs should be disposed of, incubated or eaten.

Two suggested they be eaten either raw or barely cooked with a hole poked in the top and a bit of soy sauce or green chili drizzled in (the latter method having been sampled by a friend traveling in Nicaragua, where turtle eggs and meat are widely consumed). I considered slurping one down, but the memory of Mrs. Snapper's reproachful, prehistoric gaze eventually proved too much for me.

According to Bell, the eggs are very delicate, and the embryo within can be killed if turned or jarred. If you wait until the turtles hatch, they can be removed in a box to a lake or stream.

Some folks eat turtle stew and such ? but if it's all a little too Alice In Wonderland for you, a more ecologically-minded alternative is to contact your local conservation society to arrange for pickup and proper incubation. In the end, that's what I did ? in exchange for a promise that our family could be present when they begin to hatch.

The Intouchables: movie review

Improbable pairing. You know the rest.

A millionaire (Fran?ois Cluzet, foreground) and his caretaker (Omar Sy, behind him) go out on the town in ?The Intouchables.?

The premise of the French film "The Intouchables" is like a mash-up of "The King's Speech" and "Driving Miss Daisy," with a dose of "Trading Places" for good measure. Philippe (Fran?ois Cluzet), a white millionaire quadriplegic widower, hires the black ex-con Driss (Omar Sy), who only showed up for the job interview to extend his unemployment benefits, to be his new caretaker.

To nobody's surprise in the audience, Driss and Philippe, after some rocky beginnings, hit it off. Philippe wants a lively companion who won't coddle him or shoot him pathetic looks. He knows he's taking a chance on Driss, a Senegalese native with a history of petty crime, but welcomes the risk.

Driss initially chafes at the down-and-dirty requirements of the job, but inevitably he becomes not just a caregiver but a friend. The two men go out partying; they go to the opera; they even go paragliding (Philippe was paralyzed in a paragliding accident).

It would be easy to take offense at this scenario ? just as some people were offended by the supposed Uncle Tom-ism inherent in "Driving Miss Daisy." Movies in which black characters, however nuanced or well meaning, act in subservience to whites, often raise hackles. For me, it all depends on how it's done. "Driving Miss Daisy," for example, may have offered up a stereotypical situation, but Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy were anything but stereotypes.

The situation in "The Intouchables" is more complicated because Driss, although he is presented as a life force, is a fairly one-dimensional life force. He's in the movie to give Philippe a second chance at joy. To do this, the writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano have Driss acting streetwise all the time, even when he and Philippe are attending the opera. Causing a commotion, Driss laughs at the outsize costumes and gross theatricality, and Philippe, to his amazement, joins in.

The scene is supposed to be about bonding, but what comes across instead is the implicit assumption that nobody from Driss's background could possibly "get" high culture.

In another scene, Driss livens up Philippe's stodgy birthday party by busting out some moves on the dance floor. Both Cluzet and Sy are adept enough to smooth over the racial uncomfortableness of these scenes, but the polishing extends to every other aspect of the film as well. Why doesn't Philippe ever explode at Driss? Why is Driss such an angel? The lovefest between these two is preordained because the filmmakers have included nothing that would get in the way.

It's worth noting that this movie is loosely based on actual people ? except the real-life Driss character is, in fact, an Arab. If Driss had been an Arab, "The Intouchables" would have waded into less navigable waters, but it might have made for a tougher movie.

If this film sounds like fodder for a Hollywood redo, you're correct. The Weinstein Company, which is releasing it, has also bought up the remake rights. Grade: B- (Rated R for language and some drug use.)

Samsung UN60ES8000F

It's fun to experiment, but the nature of experiments is that they don't always work. Samsung performed a few with its new high-end LED LCD HDTV, the ES8000F series, and the results are, at best, inconclusive. The 46-inch ES8000F uses several new control options like voice control, motion control, and touchpad control, to reduce the number of hardware buttons. The result is a $2,999.99 (list) HDTV with an impressive design, a solid, if not perfect picture, and a handful of novel control options that don't always work. It still comes with a conventional remote control, which works fine?but you shouldn't have to rely on it after you've spent so much money on a TV that isn't supposed to need one.

Editors' Note: This review is based on tests performed on the Samsung UN46ES8000F, the 46-inch model in the same series. Besides the screen size difference, the 60-inch $4,399.99 UN60ES8000F is identical in features, and while we didn't perform lab tests on this specific model, we expect similar performance.

The UN46ES8000F certainly looks striking, with a very thin black bezel framed by silver. The base is a wide support made of two curved, metallic plastic arms. It keeps the screen steady, but it doesn't pivot. The inputs sit on the right back edge of the back panel. You get three HDMI inputs, three USB ports, and an optical audio input facing right, and component, composite, VGA video, cable, Ethernet, and analog audio inputs facing downward. Most HDTVs this size have four HDMI ports, and having only three can be a problem if you have more than one game system along with a set-top box and Blu-ray player. A small joystick behind the right edge of the panel lets you navigate different menus without the remote.

The most notable aspect of the UN46ES8000F is its Smart Interaction interface. Besides a conventional remote and menu system, it can use a touchpad Smart Touch remote, as well as voice control and motion control. If you want, you can use the HDTV entirely like a normal screen, but with practice you can have it responding to your voice and gestures.

The Smart Touch remote is the most "normal" of the new control choices. The small, rectangular remote has only a small handful of buttons and a large touchpad area for controlling on-screen menus and cursors, which work with certain apps like the Web browser. It's a nice concept, but the touchpad area is flanked by two clickable button areas that activate menus for conventional remote controls, such as color buttons and bringing up the on-screen remote. It's very easy to accidentally click either of those areas instead of the touchpad itself to register a menu click, which brings up new menus you didn't want instead of entering the information you wanted.

Voice and Motion Controls
A camera and microphone array sits on the top edge of the HDTV, enabling voice and gesture controls. The Smart Touch remote also has a microphone you can activate with a button to control the HDTV?by speaking into the microphone instead of at the screen. The voice controls respond to either "Hi TV" or "Smart TV," depending on which you prefer. When you summon the controls with the set phrase, a small list of commands appears at the bottom of the screen. This isn't Siri or Dragon Naturally Speaking, though; you need to enunciate carefully, and you can't speak too fast if you want the HDTV to recognize your commands. With practice, though, you can turn the HDTV on and off with your voice, which is a nice feature.

The camera also allows gesture controls from the user. By waving your hand in front of the screen, a cursor appears that you can control with your motions. Making a fist "clicks" the cursor, letting you navigate the menus and Web pages. Like the voice control, it's not completely useful on its own. The screen takes a few seconds to recognize that you're waving to move the cursor, and unlike the remotes, it doesn't allow quick access to common menus and commands.
