EAST LANSING, Mich. They're glorified on TV shows such as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," but in real life forensic scientists face stress from heavy caseloads, political pressure and exposure to extremely violent crime scenes and child pornography.

But just how stressful are their jobs? And what can be done to potentially improve their working environments, productivity and, ultimately, the criminal justice system?

Armed with a $129,376, one-year grant from the National Institute of Justice, researchers from Michigan State University and Eastern Kentucky University hope to answer those questions.

The first step: Sending out surveys to forensic scientists from public and private labs nationwide that collect and process different types of evidence from DNA to chemicals to computer data. MSU is working with the Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division to tailor the surveys, said Thomas Holt, MSU associate professor of criminal justice and principal investigator.

The surveys should give researchers a better idea of the levels of job stress and satisfaction experienced by forensic scientists, Holt said.

From there, the researchers plan to collaborate with forensic lab managers to develop policy recommendations to improve efficiency and job satisfaction and decrease stress, he said.

In the weakened economy, forensic lab positions have been eliminated in Michigan and elsewhere, meaning there are fewer scientists to handle a backlog of evidence, Holt said.

While previous studies have looked at the working environment of beat cops and corrections officers, little research has been done on forensic scientists, who face a different set of tasks and challenges.

"We don't really know this landscape," Holt said. "No one has really looked at forensic scientists, even though they play a very pivotal role in the development of evidence, the presentation in court and prosecutions."

Holt's co-investigators at MSU are David Foran, associate professor and director of the Forensic Science Program, and Ruth Smith, associate professor of criminal justice and an expert in forensic chemistry.

Even though formerly a military job, GPS is regarded as a dual-use ...

Vehicle Tracking Software happens to be a widely deployed and valuable tool for commerce, scientific utilizes, monitoring, and surveillance. GPS?s correct time facilitates every day things to do these as banking, cell phone operations, as well as the control of strength grids by letting effectively synchronized hand-off switching.

Numerous civilian applications use one or more of GPS?s a few primary elements: complete locale, relative movement, and time transfer.

  • ? Clock synchronization: The accuracy of Car Tracking System time signals (?10 ns) is 2nd only into the atomic clocks on which they?re based.
  • ??? Cellular telephony: Clock synchronization enables time transfer, that?s essential for synchronizing its spreading codes with other base stations to facilitate inter-cell handoff and help hybrid GPS/cellular place detection for mobile emergency calls and other purposes. The 1st handsets with integrated GPS launched inside the late 1990s. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandated the aspect in both the handset or while in the towers (for use in triangulation) in 2002 so emergency expert services could track down 911 callers. Third-party software program builders later gained entry to GPS APIs from Nextelupon launch, followed by Sprint in 2006, and Verizon soon thereafter.
  • ?? Disaster relief/emergency solutions: Rely upon GPS for locale and timing abilities.
  • ?? Geofencing: Automobile tracking devices, person tracking systems, and pet tracking devices use GPS to locate a auto, human being, or pet. These gadgets are attached to your motor vehicle, individual, or the pet collar. The software delivers continuous tracking and mobile phone or Web updates need to the target depart a designated spot.
  • ?? Geotagging: Implementing locale coordinates to electronic objects these kinds of as pictures and other paperwork for functions these as producing map overlays.
  • ??? GPS Aircraft Tracking
  • ??? GPS Car Locators tours: Place establishes what articles to show; for instance, information regarding an approaching position of fascination.
  • ??? Map-making: Both civilian and military cartographers use GPS thoroughly.
  • ??? Navigation: Navigators worth digitally exact velocity and orientation measurements.
  • ?? Phasor measurements: GPS allows highly correct timestamping of electric power program measurements, rendering it attainable to compute phasors.
  • ??? Robotics: Self-navigating, autonomous robots utilizing a GPS sensors, which calculate latitude, longitude, time, speed, and heading.
  • ??? Recreation: By way of example, geocaching, geodashing, GPS drawing and waymarking.
  • ??? Surveying: Surveyors use absolute destinations to produce maps and ascertain home boundaries.
  • ??? Tectonics: GPS enables direct fault movement measurement in earthquakes.
  • ??? Telematics: GPS technology integrated with computer systems and mobile phone communications technologies in automotive navigation systems
  • ??? Fleet Tracking: Using GPS know-how to discover, track down and maintain make contact with reports with one or more fleet automobiles in real-time.

Restrictions on civilian use

The U.S. Government controls the export of some civilian receivers. All GPS receivers able to functioning earlier mentioned 18 kilometres (11 mi) altitude and 515 metres per second (1,001 kn) are classified as munitions (weapons) for which Condition Division export licenses are expected. These limitations endeavor to stop use of a receiver in the ballistic missile. They would not stop use inside of a cruise missile because their altitudes and speeds are identical to these of common aircraft.
This rule applies even to otherwise purely civilian models that only acquire the L1 frequency plus the C/A (Coarse/Acquisition) code and are unable to appropriate for Selective Availability (SA), and so forth.

Disabling operation over these boundaries exempts the receiver from classification as a munition. Vendor interpretations differ. The rule targets operation granted the combination of altitude and speed, although some receivers quit working even though stationary. It has brought on issues with some amateur radio balloon launches that frequently achieve thirty kilometres (19 mi).
These limitations only implement to units exported from (or that have parts exported from) the USA ? there exists a developing trade in different parts, including GPS models, provided by other nations, which are expressly sold as ITAR-free.

Army

As of 2009, army programs of GPS involve:

  • ? Navigation: GPS enables soldiers to search out objectives, even in the dark or in unfamiliar territory, and also to coordinate troop and supply movement. In the United states of america armed forces, commanders utilize the Commanders Electronic Assistant and lessen ranks make use of the Soldier Digital Assistant.
  • ??? Target tracking: Numerous army weapons programs use GPS to track opportunity ground and air targets in advance of flagging them as hostile. These weapon methods pass target coordinates to precision-guided munitions to allow them to engage targets properly. Army aircraft, significantly in air-to-ground roles, use GPS to uncover targets (by way of example, gun digital camera video clip from AH-1 Cobras in Iraq display GPS co-ordinates that can be seen with specialized computer software).
  • ??? Missile and projectile guidance: GPS enables exact focusing on of various military weapons like ICBMs, cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions. Artillery projectiles. Embedded GPS receivers able to withstand accelerations of 12,000 g or about 118 km/s2 are actually developed for use in 155 millimetres (six.1 in) howitzers.
  • ??? Search and Rescue: Downed pilots is often located more rapidly if their placement is recognized.
  • ??? Reconnaissance: Patrol movement could be managed much more closely.
  • ??? GPS satellites have a set of nuclear detonation sensors consisting of an optical sensor (Y-sensor), an X-ray sensor, a dosimeter, and an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) sensor (W-sensor), that kind an important portion of the U.s. Nuclear Detonation Detection Program.

The New Internet Marketing Trend ? Streaming Web Audio

When we initial proposed multimedia pattern 7 years ago, MP3 audio files were already expansion around the Internet. MP3?s recognition rose hurriedly after Napster expelled their P2P record pity network module in 1999.

Because the MP3 record size is sufficient not as big then ?MOV?, ?WAV? audio format, and has improved sound quality, it didn?t take too long for MP3 to turn a leading digital audio format of Internet.

Today, it continues to browbeat the Internet?s audio market, and has remained unvaried as the most appropriate selection amid digital audio song formats.

Historically, there was a insufficient of Internet speed and the size of P.C. hard disks and ROM?s were comparatively tiny and expensive. Especially MP3 files had to be converted from ?MOV? or ?WAV? record formats and the audio recording, editing hardware and software was really complex to use, together with really costly and usually veteran studios had low enough pockets to purchase.

Therefore, it had never been an easy apparatus for Internet marketers and web developers to use to their advantage. we can still recollect the struggles to compact the audio files, and balancing the high quality of the sound, to make it 28.8kbps modem compatible.

Very couple of business websites had web audio in their website, and the ones who did were usually there as credentials music. There wasn?t any selling role or plan at the back it. It was mostly designers display off their ?advanced tricks?, perplexing to stir their employers, basically an ?e-toy? for website designers.

Today, the Internet bandwidth is no longer a leading lag to Internet multimedia information transferring. Technology continues to develop at lightning speed, computers right away have large capacities and the cost of hardware has dramatically dropped, creation it probable for web hosting firm to give a large amount of server space for website owners to store and transfer audio and video content, at an enormously low cost.

But the cost of audio editing software remained comparatively high, with more modernized features, but still acted a blockade to Internet marketers who expected to make audio a segment of their Internet marketing.

This presented an chance for Internet Marketers and software developers. Together, they have worked out these issues, tying occasionally used modernized features, gripping usually the most utilized, and created a sufficient more elementary software for web audio recording.

This new web audio software and connected services has been sole and used by Internet marketers and online business owners via the past couple of years and the results are actually convincing.

Some have claimed their sales conversion rate to have increased by 40) just by adding the audio sales spawn on their web page. Can this be true? we will confer this in more height in other issue, but absolutely, web audio and video updated a new ?depth?, a new dimension to Internet marketing. It is primarily used for audio newsletters, web audio sales letters, audio testimonials, available tele-seminars, raining materials and more.

It is a really elementary square of software. If you know how to talk, and how to click, you can record your summary and put it online. No practice or technical expertise necessary, no special equipment needed, solely a microphone connected to your computer.

I still use the modernized Pro chronicle audio/video prolongation software for my complex projects, but we similar to to use this small, and feature-focused software is to not as big singular charge projects, since the ease and the time saving. And the cost of the software is so cheep!

For those who do not have a computer, can?t figure out how to block in the microphone in to their computer, or are too quiescent to do so, a few marketers have even written a write network for recording audio files for them.
You simply collect up phone, dial their number, record your summary on their system, and they will broach your audio record to your website. But you have to pay a monthly fee for your laziness, and you still have to collect up your phone and dial the number.

Some dedicated web hosting companies, such as the one we use, ThirdSphere, moreover jumped onto this new trend, inclusive connected features in their service package to earn sales. It provides Flash Audio Generator, Flash Video Generator software, and helps web designers to modify their pre-recorded audio and video record to a lightweight FLV record to be put online.

As a new rarely efficient Internet selling method, streaming web audio and video will go on to blossom in the Internet selling area and go on to grip at Internet marketers and visitors? consideration for a number of yeas, until the day when all sites on Internet have a voice and speak to us.

For more information about how to use streaming web audio as am efficient internet selling method, and how to recording a mp3 audio for website use, greatfully visit:

An app to match your appetite in Cambodia

A cafe in Cambodia recently introduced electronic menus, side stepping language barriers between tourists and restaurant staff.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

One of Asia?s poorest nations has one of the latest high-tech spins: A cafe here recently introduced electronic menus.

The e-menus at Coffee Room, a small shop that opened in January in Phnom Penh, allows customers to place their orders, call a server to their table, and ask for the bill by simply touching the tablet computers that are available at every table. Diners can also type in how they want their drinks prepared (such as ?no ice? or ?no sugar?), read ingredients, and use the ?menus? to access Facebook, Skype, or Twitter.

Irina Afonina, a businesswoman from Kazakhstan who has lived in Cambodia for five years, says she developed the electronic menu to simplify the restaurant-going experience for expatriates who don?t speak the local language.

?In countries like Cambodia and Kazakhstan, it?s hard for customers to order,? she says. ?Sometimes you ask what is inside the dish and they can?t explain ? because they don?t understand your English pronunciation or they don?t know what?s inside.?

Ms. Afonina, who is also the chief executive officer of Cambodia-based IT company Cresittel, says her e-menus will soon allow people to select their native language ? and to chat with customers seated at different tables of the restaurant.?We?re not providing only coffee and snacks; it?s also entertainment,? she says.

Dive into 2012 - Business Management Daily

As we enter 2012, it?s a good time to review employment policies and practices in light of the government?s aggressive efforts to enforce employment laws. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the EEOC, U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and its Office of Federal Contract Compli?ance Programs (OFCCP) are all cracking down on employers.

To ensure compliance, review your policies and practices in all these areas.

Background checks

Evaluate your policies for using criminal and credit records to perform background checks on job applicants. The EEOC contends that many such background checks have a disparate impact on minorities.

Your policies shouldn?t prohibit hiring any applicants convicted of a crime. Instead, you must take into account the nature of the crime and the relationship of the crime to the prospective job.

Pennsylvania law requires similar background-check policies. Plus, some municipalities, such as Phila???delphia, have laws prohibiting application questions about criminal histories, ensuring that initial screening decisions are made without knowing the applicant?s criminal history. Criminal background checks can be conducted only after a first interview.

Other states have adopted laws that restrict the use of credit checks.

Wellness programs

Make sure your wellness program complies with the ADA, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Under the ADA, participation in a wellness program must be voluntary. ?

Under GINA, employers may not offer any incentive to wellness-?program participants that rewards them for providing genetic information, in??cluding family medical histories. If you wish to obtain genetic in??for??mation to gain a complete picture of someone?s health, make clear that a participant will re??ceive the financial incentive regardless of whether he or she answers questions that elicit ge??netic information.

HIPAA generally prohibits discrimi?nation on the basis of a health condition in determining benefit premiums. Thus, a wellness program that offers a premium discount for satisfying a health factor (such as lowering blood pressure) must meet certain requirements to comply with HIPAA.

Independent contractors

Review relationships with independent contractors to ensure they are properly classified. The DOL and the IRS have stepped up misclassification enforcement.

Congress is also interested in the issue, and several bills have been introduced that would impose additional requirements and penalties on employers that misclassify contractors.

If you determine that some people doing work for you do not meet the standards for being independent con??tractors, you might be able to re??struc??ture the way they perform their services so they?re properly classified. Of course, it?s also possible that you may need to classify them as employees.

Either way, you must address misclassification, because penalties for noncompliance are substantial.

Whistle-blower protections

Modify your employment policies to encourage internal reporting of complaints, including whistle-blower complaints, which are a major focus of the recently enacted Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. That law permits whistle-blowers to bypass employers? internal reporting mechanisms and to complain directly to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Other laws also allow whistle-blowers to go directly to the ?appropriate government agency. ?

Your policies should encourage employees to raise complaints internally and assure employees that they will not be retaliated against for making an internal complaint. When an employee complains internally, that?s an opportunity to investigate and take corrective action.

Social media

Evaluate your social media policy to ensure that it does not prohibit ?protected concerted activity? under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). The NLRB has ruled that some em??ployee social media communication may be protected concerted activity when co-workers communicate about their terms and conditions of employment.

Consider adding language stating that your social media policy does not prohibit NLRA-protected activity. Delete language that would bar employee communication about the terms and conditions of employment.

Medical leave

Review leave policies to ensure they don?t call for the arbitrary termination of employees who have been on medical leave for a fixed period of time. The EEOC continues to actively litigate such cases, arguing that em??ployers have a duty to engage in a reasonable accommodation dialogue rather than automatically terminating employees who have been on leave for a certain period of time?even cases where leave time is generous. ?

Pay practices

The Obama administration is focused on pay equity, as are the EEOC and the OFCCP.

Review compensation practices to identify and fix pay disparities in comparable jobs. Document the basis for your starting pay levels.

Have your attorney handle this, to maximize your protection under attorney-client privilege and the attorney work-product doctrine.

Cancer therapy more potent when it hits 2 targets

Friday, February 24, 2012

Simultaneous targeting of two different molecules in cancer is an effective way to shrink tumors, block invasion, and stop metastasis, scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have found?work that may improve the effectiveness of combination treatments that include drugs like Avastin.

The two-target approach, tested in mice with a type of cancer known as neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors, may have broad application for treating a wide variety of cancers, the UCSF team said. The drugs used in the tests belong to classes of pharmaceuticals that are either on the market or under development in clinical trials.

Clinical trials also are already underway to gauge effectiveness of the approach in humans with prostate cancer, breast cancer, and other tumor types. The UCSF study, described in the journal Cancer Discovery this week, is the first to show how the drug combination works in the laboratory.

The results are promising, said Donald McDonald, MD, PhD, a member of the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Cardiovascular Research Institute and professor of anatomy, who led the research.

In the study, treating mice with the dual-target approach turned aggressive tumors with invasive fingers penetrating surrounding tissues and many metastases into tiny balls with few or no metastases.

"It's the combination of approaches?there's a synergy between the two," McDonald said. "You add two and two, and you get 10."

How each target works

The two targets are both proteins that scientists have known for years are involved in cancer. Both play important roles in malignant tumors.

The first, called c-MET, is involved in two processes associated with the most deadly cancers. A clinical marker of cancer aggressiveness, c-MET drives tumor invasion into surrounding tissues. It is also involved in metastasis?the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body where they can establish new tumors.

The second target is a protein known as vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF). VEGF is a protein that promotes the growth of new blood vessels. Growing tumors hijack this process to expand their network of blood vessels to provide nutrients. Drugs blocking VEGF have been developed based on the simple assumption that tumors cannot grow if you choke off their blood supply.

Drugs that target these molecules are in development, and a few are already on the market. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first of these in 2004 to treat metastatic colon cancer. That drug, called Avastin, is manufactured by the South San Francisco-based company Genentech. Avastin was approved for metastatic breast cancer in 2008 under the FDA's accelerated approval program.

The FDA revoked approval of Avastin for breast cancer last year after further assessing the relative risks and benefits to women taking it. Blocking VEGF seemed to slow tumor growth for awhile, but the FDA determined that it did not significantly improve or extend the lives of most women taking it.

"It was not clear why some tumors responded and others did not. It was also unclear why some tumors would respond initially and then would stop responding," said McDonald, who has studied blood vessels in tumors and the effect of cancer drugs for years in his UCSF laboratory.

Two years ago former UCSF professor Douglas Hanahan and colleagues found in laboratory experiments that Avastin-like drugs would shrink tumors but unexpectedly did something else as well. The drugs also morphed tumors from roundish blobs into highly irregular growths with tendrils that penetrated surrounding tissues and even spread to other organs?suggesting that the VEGF blockade could also make tumors more aggressive, invasive and metastatic.

McDonald's group confirmed Hanahan's findings and discovered that c-MET was involved. In their latest research, Barbara Sennino, PhD, with other investigators in his group set out to determine whether c-MET drove tumor aggressiveness during anti-VEGF therapy. What their paper shows is that blocking c-MET and VEGF together in mice is more powerful than blocking either alone because it not only slows tumor growth but also reduces invasion and metastasis.

They tested two inhibitors of VEGF?a neutralizing antibody and sunitinib?and three inhibitors of c-MET?crizotinib, PF-04217903, and cabozantinib (XL184). Unlike the other agents, cabozantinib simultaneously inhibits both c-MET and VEGF. Inhibition of c-MET and VEGF together with a drug combination or with cabozantinib had more profound effects on tumors than any of the agents that blocked only one of the targets.

These promising laboratory results still need more tests of safety and effectiveness in the clinic, McDonald said, and it may be a year or more before the drugs are routinely available to patients.

CONTINUE IMPROVING COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE ...

What All Business Managers Need To Know To
Improve Communication In Their Workplace

In this blog, once again, I want to stress the importance (or rather, the necessity) of opening up a dialogue with ALL employees in any group or business. As I have mentioned many times here, I have been coaching (preaching?) business and executive improvement for over a quarter of a century now. Just recently two questions were asked of me that would indicate this message is still not getting across properly to those that need to practice it.

The first question came from a plant manager who asked me what he and his staff could do to get a better ?feel? of what was actually happening each day out in their factory. The second was from a male department supervisor of 46?(female) garment workers who wanted to develop a closer relationship (camaraderie and kinship were ?his? words) with his employees. I presented them both with pretty much the same response. That is, you have to give every single employee an opportunity to be asked ? and given an honest response ? to this question: ?What can we do to help you do your job (better).?

The bare essence of this question is paramount to ?successful business awareness?. As I have always advocated most business owners, executives, managers, and supervisors DO NOT KNOW all they should know about what is going on in their place of business. My experience has proven that rank-and-file employees usually seem to be the only ones aware of hidden discrepancies, costs, and serious problems ? ?because hardly anyone of real importance ever takes the time to ask them.

You NEED to set up a system of communicating with all employees in order to learn how to make effective, but yet easy-to-implement, improvements. As I suggested to both of these individuals, as well as to hundreds of others, visit http://www.b2bawareness.com and opt in for a free report ?Are You Asking The Right Questions To The Right People??. Many executives and managers have been blown away by the ?simplicity in the logic? asked in these ten questions. I have been told by many of my readers that this report made them want to change the way they managed immediately and asked for my help.

This site provides direct and easy to understand logic for any business to improve, and it should be a must read for anyone who leads people. For every business owner, executive, manager, and supervisor who views this site, I believe they will look forward to going to work the next day. This site offers an e-book entitled ?Successful Business Awareness??,?and any coaching support that may be needed to assure the promises made become reality. It is supported by many testimonials and claims from former and current clients.

If you are a business manager, executive or owner, find out for yourself why communication at work may seem lost ? but now can be found again, with positive and rewarding results.

To learn more about communication in the workplace and ?successful business awareness?, and how its use of ?panorizontal communication? will help you and your company, read what others say @ http://www.b2bawareness.com/testimonials.html and learn for yourself how you too can improve even further as a solid, sound communicator.

Thank you for visiting ? and I wish you nice days always,

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 review

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the world of email. Yes, email! Sure, many of you have given up on the stuff in favor of more instant means of communication, but don't worry, because that's here too! Yes, the BlackBerry PlayBook, which was released 10 months ago, is now finally able to send messages all by itself. Sure, BlackBerry Bridge is still there and more useful than ever, tying the PlayBook even closer to your work-issued smartphone, but the 7-inch slate finally feels like it can stand a little more solidly on its own two feet.

Thankfully that's not all -- this recently refreshed tablet has a few other tricks up its sleeve, most notable being the ability to run some (focus on the some) Android apps without having to resort to any messy tweaks or hacks. The experience isn't entirely clean, nor does it quite feel like the refresh the "two dot oh" moniker implies, but it is a nice step forward. Click on through to see what you get.

A few individuals sense it?s a waste of cash to plant these flowers since they won?t last very long. In one or two components of the country you might discover low-cost flowers within the months of July and August. Within the warmer local weather zones you are able to in all probability discover marigolds developing any time of the year. In the less warm climates after the flowers go to seed, save the seeds and plant them into the backyard in early spring and also you can have those charming falls colours in the course of the summertime also.

Because of the variety of their life cycles and their distinctive territories, most of the gardeners are inspired to cultivate mixed flowerbeds of herbaceous flowers and early flowering bulbs, trees and shrubs. They mix flowers that bloom at distinct times in order that the garden is always full of color. Back in the 17th century, Sir Joseph Banks has created the flowerbeds that bloom at varied time throughout the spring months in The Royal Botanic Kew Gardens, near London. At present Kew Gardens is now a visitor sight in London and claims to have the earth largest collection of living crops and a herbarium plants.

Moderate pruning is advised, taking on the strongest varieties first. The floribunda is probably probably the most hard bush to prune satisfactorily; light pruning of young wooden and average pruning of older lumber ought to end result in the bush flowering con?tinuously throughout the summer.

There are not any absolute guidelines and the weak plant is frequently a problem child: in this occasion commonsense need to play its part.
Many shrubs can be pruned now to within 1-2 ins. of final year?s growth; the ensuing growth will bear now year?s flowers.

On a bluebird sunny day, soften the tough contrasty light by putting a diffusion display betweenthe flower you?re photographing and the sun. You can buy a transportable diffusion display oruse one thing you?ve on hand. You can totally block the sun and put your flower inshade, then redirect a few light back on the flower with a reflector. This reflector can be acommercially made reflector or simply a thing reflective such as a white T-shirt or a piece of foamcore. Another photographic strategy would be to make use of fill flash. In case your photographic equipment has an automaticfill flash function then give it a try. Experiment while using lighting ratio if your camera will let youchange the flash output. I discover reflectors being a far better alternative then fill flash many of the time.

It?s definitely the customers. I just went to a? CC here in NYC and the entire store was cleaned out except for a few products.

Now get this? what the CC had left were beat up display model laptops with missing keys. The liquidators had the gall to still sell these for between $450-$800 and yet customers were literally ogling these beat up laptops like they were seriously considering buying one. I guess it?s because they were all labeled ?Last one in the store!?

LOL?

Oil Prices Surge To 9-Month High After Iran Cut Exports To Britain And France

-- Oil prices jumped to a nine-month high above $105 a barrel on Monday after Iran said it halted crude exports to Britain and France in an escalation of a dispute over the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark March crude was up $1.91 to $105.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier in the day, it rose to $105.21, the highest since May. The contract rose 93 cents to settle at $103.24 per barrel in New York on Friday.

Markets in the United States are closed Monday for the Presidents Day holiday.

Iran's oil ministry said Sunday it stopped crude shipments to British and French companies in an apparent pre-emptive blow against the European Union after the bloc imposed sanctions on Iran's crucial fuel exports. They include a freeze of the country's central bank assets and an oil embargo set to begin in July.

Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi had warned earlier this month that Tehran could cut off oil exports to "hostile" European nations. The 27-nation EU accounts for about 18 percent of Iran's oil exports.

The EU sanctions, along with other punitive measures imposed by the U.S., are part of Western efforts to derail Iran's disputed nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran denies the charges, and says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Analysts said Iran's announcement would likely have minimal impact on supplies, because only about 3 percent of France's oil consumption is from Iranian sources, while Britain had not imported oil from the Islamic republic in six months.

"The price rise is more a reflection of concerns about the further escalation in tensions between Iran and the West," said commodity analyst Caroline Bain of the Economist Intelligence Unit. "Banning the tiny quantities of exports to the U.K. and France involves very little risk for Iran ? indeed quite the opposite, it catches the headlines and leads to a higher global oil price, which is something Iran is very keen to encourage."

Oil prices also rose on hopes that Greece's new bailout deal will be approved on Monday as well as by China's decision to boost money supply bid to spur lending and economic growth. China's central bank said Saturday it will lower the ratio of funds that banks must hold as reserves, a move that frees tens of billions of dollars.

Oil has jumped from $96 earlier this month amid optimism the global economy may grow more this year than previously expected. J.P. Morgan raised its Brent crude price forecast to as high as $135 from $120 ? on Monday, the April Brent crude contract was up 79 cents at $120.37 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

"Building economic momentum has the potential to pull oil prices higher for the next 12 to 24 months," J.P. Morgan said in a report.

In other energy trading in March contracts, heating oil gained 1.61 cents to $3.2050 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 3.2 cents to $3.22 per gallon. Natural gas lost 4.8 cents to $2.636 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Ramirez expected to arrive to A's on Friday

(AP) ? Manny Ramirez is expected to join Oakland at its spring training facility on Friday, yet another part of the Athletics' offseason overhaul.

After trading All-Star pitchers Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez for prospects, the A's signed veteran pitcher Bartolo Colon, re-signed outfielder Coco Crisp, agreed to terms with Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and added Ramirez.

The A's also dealt A's two-time All-Star closer Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Sweeney to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Josh Reddick and two minor leaguers.

A's manager Bob Melvin defended the moves Tuesday, saying he avoids using the term "rebuilding," and looks forward to talking to the A's latest addition, who could add much needed power to the middle of the lineup should everything fall into place in Oakland.

I hope I can pass on the essence of this to my daughter.

I feel that love and compassion are the moral fabric of world peace. Let me first define what I mean by compassion. When you have pity or compassion for a very poor person, you are showing sympathy because he or she is poor; your compassion is based on altruistic considerations. On the other hand, love towards your wife, your husband, your children, or a close friend is usually based on attachment. When your attachment changes, your kindness also changes; it may disappear. This is not true love. Real love is not based on attachment, but on altruism. In this case your compassion will remain as a humane response to suffering as long as beings continue to suffer. ~ Dalai Lama

Gulf spill oil well investor to pay record fine

Reporting from Washington?

A minority investor in the failed Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico has agreed to pay $90 million in civil penalties and other fees related to the 2010 oil spill, the first settlement before an upcoming major trial linked to the disaster.

The Obama administration touted the settlement with MOEX Offshore 2007, a subsidiary of the Japanese firm Mitsui & Co., as the largest penalty ever paid for violating the Clean Water Act.

"This landmark settlement is an important step ? but only a first step ? toward achieving accountability and protecting the future of the gulf ecosystem by funding critical habitat preservation projects," Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. said.

But independent analysts offered mixed reviews of the settlement and its implications for possible penalties against the major companies involved the disaster, including BP, the well operator; and Transocean Ltd., which owned the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded as a result of the well blowout.

"There's a limit to how much the MOEX settlement tells us about what may happen with BP and other companies involved in the spill, but it certainly signals the government is not going to seek anything approaching the maximum penalties against the other defendants," said David Uhlmann, director of the environmental law program at the University of Michigan and former head of the Justice Department's environmental crimes section. "There's no escaping the conclusion that this is an extremely small penalty in the context of the gulf oil spill."

Opening arguments begin Feb. 27 in New Orleans in the civil lawsuit brought against BP and other companies by the Justice Department and thousands of gulf-area residents who say they were hurt by the oil spill.

MOEX was the smallest shareholder in the project and a passive partner that had no role in the drilling operation that was underway when the Macondo well blew out, killing 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon rig and spewing nearly 5 million barrels of oil into the sea. Under the terms of the settlement, MOEX would pay $70 million in penalties and $20 million for preservation and land acquisition projects in several Gulf Coast states.

Several legal and environmental experts raised concerns that MOEX's payments did not seem to reflect the magnitude of the spill.

Richard Steiner, a retired professor of marine conservation at the University of Alaska, said that the Justice Department may be focusing its efforts on BP instead. It "may be trying to get the small fish out of the way, so they can land the big one ? BP ? later this month," he said.

"And, a settlement is almost always better for the injured environment than protracted litigation. For instance, the Exxon Valdez litigation is still ongoing, after 23 years," he added.

David Pettit, a lawyer with the Natural Resources Defense Council, said that the consent decree between the government and MOEX did not preclude collecting more money from the company once the authorities complete a natural resources damage assessment.

Some environmentalists also questioned where the $70 million in penalties was going. About $45 million will be used to replenish the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund as compensation for government efforts to manage the spill. The remaining $25 million will be distributed among the gulf states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Love-struck vegans will find seductive menu ideas in Bryant Terry?s The Inspired Vegan .

Adler, Karen & Judith Fertig. The Gardener & the Grill: The Bounty of the Garden Meets the Sizzle of the Grill. Running Pr. May 2012. c.192p. photogs. index. ISBN 9780762441112. pap. $20. COOKING CookAdler180 Cookbook Reviews, February 15, 2012

Known as the BBQ Queens, Adler and Fertig (coauthors, 25 Essentials: Techniques for Grilling Fish ) are barbecue instructors and competitors. Their latest cookbook is full of creative ideas for grilling with garden-fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Standout recipes include unique condiments (e.g., Smoked Summer Tomato Basil Butter), substantial vegetarian options (e.g., Fire-Roasted Fava Beans with Sheep?s Milk Cheese), and fruit desserts (e.g., Planked Peaches & Blueberries with Amaretto Sauce). This book does not illustrate the finer points of grilling, so readers will need some prior knowledge of equipment and technique. VERDICT A refreshing departure from meat-centric BBQ bibles.

Banfield, Kelsey. The Naptime Chef: Fitting Great Food Into Family Life. Running Pr. Mar. 2012. c.224p. photogs. index. ISBN 9780762442126. pap. $23. COOKING

Don?t assume that this book is interchangeable with Debbie Koenig?s recent Parents Need To Eat Too . While both books address the same audience?new parents struggling to put healthy, satisfying meals on the table?they take different approaches. Blogger Banfield (www.thenaptimechef.com) focuses on recipes that can be prepped and cooked in short intervals, like Ham & Corn Chowder, Poached Salmon with Leeks, and Gingerbread Cupcakes with Meyer Lemon Glaze. VERDICT Banfield?s book is less comprehensive and nutritionally informative than Koenig?s, but its simpler design will help readers quickly find the recipes they have time to tackle. Great for new parents.

Curley, William. Couture Chocolate: A Masterclass in Chocolate. Jacqui Small: Aurum, dist. by Trafalgar Square. Mar. 2012. 224p. photogs. index. ISBN 9781906417598. $45. COOKING

Award-winning British chocolatier Curley showcases his craft in this inspiring, artfully photographed cookbook featuring exquisite confections worthy of a display case. Novices can benefit from the introductory ?Chocolate Essentials? chapter, which provides a brief history followed by practical tips and illustrated technique guides. The exacting, often costly recipes, however, are best left to professionals. VERDICT Home cooks who?ve worked with Peter P. Greweling?s Chocolates & Confections or recipes from master pastry chefs (e.g., Fran?ois Payard and Pierre Herm?) should be capable of tackling these inspiring recipes, which include everything chocolate from rolled truffles to advanced patisserie.

Dahl, Sophie. Very Fond of Food: A Year in Recipes. Ten Speed: Crown Pub. Group. Apr. 2012. c.288p. photogs. index. ISBN 9781607741787. $29.99. COOKING CookDahl180 Cookbook Reviews, February 15, 2012

In this seasonal collection of breakfasts, lunches, and suppers, Dahl weaves evocative memories of boarding school, summer vacations, and teenage heartbreak with recipes like Tapioca Stewed with Apples and Apricots, Winter Curry with Saffron Cinnamon Rice, and Ricotta Tarts with Creamy Pecorino Sauce. VERDICT Fans of stylish, anecdote-wielding celebrity chefs will find plenty to love in this collection, which favors vegetables, grains, legumes, seafood, and dairy.

Danhi, Robert. Easy Thai Cooking: 75 Family-Style Dishes You Can Prepare in Minutes. Tuttle. Mar. 2012. 162p. photogs. index. ISBN 9780804841795. $16.95. COOKING

In this vibrant, accessible take on Thai cooking, chef and instructor Danhi delivers authentic flavors through nontraditional recipes that make smart use of store-bought shortcuts. Unlike his previous Southeast Asian Flavors or David Thompson?s more comprehensive Thai Food , this book emphasizes practicality and convenience. Tempting recipes like BBQ Corn with a Sriracha Slather and Tamarind Soy Chicken with Cashews can be made easily on busy weeknights. VERDICT Danhi?s expert tips and insights provide a systematic way for home cooks to start experimenting on their own. Interested readers may enjoy this publisher?s other books on everyday Asian cooking, like Bee Yinn Low?s Easy Chinese Recipes and Debra Samuels?s My Japanese Table .

Day, Cheryl & Griffith Day with Amy Paige Condon. The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook. Artisan: Workman. Mar. 2012. c.272p. photogs. index. ISBN 9781579654580. $24.95. COOKING

Approaching its tenth anniversary, the Back in the Day Bakery is a popular Savannah destination serving up old-fashioned American treats with a healthy dose of Southern flair. Following an enthusiastic foreword by Paula Deen, founders Cheryl and Griffith Day share sweet and savory bakery favorites like Old-Fashioned Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting, Salted Caramel Apple Pie, and Bacon Jam Empanadas. By incorporating some less traditional ingredients (e.g., flavored sugars, guava paste, and bennecake flour), the authors successfully breathe new life into familiar favorites. ? VERDICT A well-rounded baking book suitable for home cooks of all levels. [Five-city tour.]

Dragonwagon, Crescent. Bean by Bean: A Cookbook; More than 200 Recipes for Fresh Beans, Dried Beans, Cool Beans, Hot Beans, Savory Beans, Even Sweet Beans! Workman. Mar. 2012. c.400p. illus. index. ISBN 9780761132417. pap. $15.95. COOKING

With clever illustrations, recipe titles (e.g., Cornbread Pie ? la Hippie), and headnotes, the book stays friendly and informative without becoming prosaic. Includes a helpful ?Basic Beanery? appendix with dried-bean cooking instructions. VERDICT Health food?focused readers will appreciate icons that identify vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and ?meatest? recipes, as well as the abundant variety of flavors and cultural influences in this exhaustive and inexpensive cookbook.

Mullen, Seamus. Seamus Mullen?s Hero Food: How Cooking with Delicious Things Can Make Us Feel Better. Andrews McMeel. May 2012. c.320p. photogs. index. ISBN 9781449407582. $35. COOKING

After being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, Manhattan restaurateur Mullen modified his diet to improve his well-being. His debut cookbook, which pairs traditional Spanish cuisine with rustic farm-to-table fare, highlights 18 ingredients (?Hero Foods?) that help him manage his symptoms. Ajo Blanco with Sardine Confit and Octopus and Parsley Salad reflect Mullen?s years of work and travel in Spain, while Crispy Tuscan Kale on the Grill and Slow-Roasted Lamb Shoulder highlight the bounty of his Vermont farm. VERDICT Mullen?s personal success lends clout to this study in holistic, inclusive eating. Readers interested in further exploring Spanish cuisine might also try Claudia Roden?s The Food of Spain or titles by Penelope Casas.

Terry, Bryant. The Inspired Vegan: Seasonal Ingredients, Simple Recipes, Mouthwatering Menus. Da Capo Lifelong. Feb. 2012. c.256p. photogs. index. ISBN 9780738213750. pap. $19. COOKING CookTerry180 Cookbook Reviews, February 15, 2012

Terry?s follow-up to his excellent Vegan Soul Kitchen lays bare the many inspirations behind his creative vegan cuisine. Each of 12 seasonal menus begins with a quote and a story, and Terry lists book and music recommendations in sidebars. This approach, while unconventional, offers an intriguing way to connect to Terry?s recipes. Among these drinks, snacks, salads, mains, sides, and desserts you?ll find sophisticated Strawberry Gazpacho Shooters with Crispy Rosemary, addictive Paprika Peanuts, and an indulgent Aromatic Asparagus and Sweet Potato Curry. VERDICT Highly recommended for vegans who like to entertain.

Thompson, Antony Worrall. Slow Cooking: 100 Recipes for the Slow Cooker, the Oven, and the Stove Top. Mitchell Beazley: Octopus, dist. by Hachette. Feb. 2012. 224p. photogs. index. ISBN 9781845336417. $19.99. COOKING

Like Michele Scicolone (The Italian Slow Cooker ), British chef and TV personality Thompson ( Real Family Food ) seems to have unlocked the potential of this much-maligned appliance, using it to turn out such fare as Seafood Laksa, Moroccan Spiced Roast Chicken, and Rich Maple Cr?me Caramel. Note that these recipes often make use of the stove or oven to build flavor and texture. VERDICT Those suffering from slow cooker cookbook fatigue will find new inspiration in this beautiful book, with a tidy layout and bright photographs that will erase unpleasant memories of bland, colorless slow-cooked duds.

In his latest cookbook, Yarvin ( The Too Many Tomatoes Cookbook ) seeks to correct the unfavorable perception that British cooking is usually bland and heavy. The recipes he presents are unabashedly traditional and range from breakfast fare like Kedgeree (rice with eggs and smoked fish) and main courses such as the Miser?s Feast (a Welsh dish of pork chops) to desserts, e.g., Fat Rascals (cookies studded with currants). Readers may be surprised by the inclusion of dishes from the curry shop, a mainstay of modern Britain. Yarvin is American, and his background distinguishes this book from such others as Sybil Kapoor?s Simply British . His writing is not nostalgic but appreciative, as he draws on anecdotes from his travels in the UK. Color photographs throughout heighten the appeal of the recipes. ? VERDICT A welcome and enjoyable addition to the ranks of ethnic cookbooks. Highly recommended.??Peter Hepburn, Univ. of Illinois at Chicago Lib.
