Lebanon: Roadside bomb hits car near Syrian border

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanon's state-run news agency says a roadside bomb has struck a car traveling on a main road near the border with Syria, wounding several people.

Lebanon has been on edge since a July 9 powerful car bomb exploded in a Hezbollah stronghold in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut.

Sunni-Shiite tensions have risen sharply in the country, particularly since the militant Shiite group raised its profile by openly fighting alongside President Bashar Assad's forces in Syria.

Lebanese security officials say Tuesday's bomb appeared to have been detonated remotely and struck a car driving toward Syria.

It was not immediately clear who was in the vehicle or whether it was an assassination attempt. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
